sheaffer vac fill all apart

i wanted to put this up in one complete post... hope it's not a total mess and makes some sense...

the blind cap completely unscrews and i can juuust see the rod.  definitely enough to get a needle in there to deposit some ammonia/water...
will have to study up on how to restore these.
but i got this beauty for the princely sum of $27!!
there's not a crack on it, either.  the imprint is a bit worn on the right end of things, but still very easy to read.  only the A in usa is worn...
it also says 1250 under the made in and patented stuff...
??

anyways.
cool little pen.

thought i'd share.
can't wait to get it writing.

edit:
oh yeah!  got it at the flea market this morning!  the best flea market buy i've had yet!

HA HA HA AHAAAH HA HAHAA!!!!!!
biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I did it.  I got it off.  And I didn't damage or hurt ANYthing.

and I did it using a wooden clothespin.  ANM I believe, suggested to somebody a while back, to use a clothespin on the section of an exterbrook to 'grab' it better.  and then you would use slip pliers to grab the clothespin to get an actual grip.  so that's what I did.except i cut a groove into the pin where it would grab the nib.  then i took pliers and gripped the whole thing, heated it up, and it screwed right off.

it was nasty too.

sorry the pics are grayscale.  the file size is smaller when i do that.  and color really isn't all that necessary here...

the groove on the left is the one the nib is sitting in.  the groove to the right was an earlier attempt to make a 'grabby' groove.  it didn't work, so i modified...

and this is the nastiness i saw when i pulled it all apart.
wish my ultrasonic was working.  one of the capacitors blew out in a power surge...
have to get it fixed...

more info on some of the take apart stuff....

not sure if anybody cares, but i always think it's nice to have as much info about something in one place so that when people go looking for something, to do it on their own, they don't have to dig so much.

so here's the pen with the nib unit taken off.  Not sure if I could easily take the nib off of the feed and the sleeve or whatever you'd call it, but i cleaned it out really good with the ear bulb technique and it seems just fine.  by the way, i'd say this is xf or xxf.  the finest pen i currently own.  and it's SMOOOOOTH as silk.  i love the older sheaffers.

next step is to take the filler knob off.  use some tweezers or something to unscrew this 'nut' thing.  mine came out very easily.  i mean, REALLY easily.  of course it had all been soaking in a mild ammonia water bath all afternoon, too...

once you get the nut out, there's a yellow plastic ball that fits into the socket of the nut you just took out.  put the filler knob out of the way of course.  i grabbed the rod with my pliers after i wrapped some black tape around it so not to scratch it up.  the yellow ball thing came off pretty easily.  i'd be really careful with this thing though.  once that's off, the silver nut slides off, and you can push the rod back down into the pen and then push it out with a skinny nail or a pin or something.

so here's the rod out of the pen.  i put the parts back on to keep up with everything...
the 'point' at the left end of the rod had a beat up washer or whatever it's called, in the little groove at the point.  the point unscrews so it's easy to get the washer off the rod.
will need to order another one of those.

after all this, i put lots of silicone grease on the threads of the nib unit and the filler knob and i'm using it like an eyedropper because i really wanted to use it!  i can't stand having a pen
that's not usable at all.  so i need to order... something for this pen.

i'm curious if i'm supposed to knock out the packed in unit (that has the threads for the filler knob) like one would knock out the piston mechanism on a pelikan?  i read somewhere that they're glued in??  so that may not work.  is this where the drill bit comes in?  you 'drill' out the old felt piece?  i think if i packed in another felt cut to size, with a bunch of silicone grease on it, it would work wouldn't it?  i mean, i'd get the old felt out as best as i could first, but all this seems really simple.  i didn't even need any special tools!  yeepa!

somebody tell me i'm crazy.

:P

i know it.
