HisNibs.com update -- Conklin and Crocodile
January 17th, 2014

For those of us not fortunate enough to be at the Philadelphia Pen Show this
weekend -- moi included -- a couple of new pens and a pen roll sale from Lai

First up is the Conklin Herringbone 2
http://www.hisnibs.com/herringbone_2.htm (2 is my designation), as it's a
re-design of the retired model. Speaking of retired models that aren't even
available with the manufacturer any more, I still have a few -- as I write
this -- of the Monteverde Regatta http://www.hisnibs.com/regatta1.htm in
Chrome/Black (a new version will be coming out soon) and the Conklin Glider
http://www.hisnibs.com/glider.htm in Coral. Once those are gone, they're

From Crocodile we have the new Shimmering Jewel
http://www.hisnibs.com/shimmering_jewel.htm model -- in both western and
Chinese calligraphy nib versions.

For the remainder of January, my wife Lai Yee is offering a free 6 or 10-pen
poly pen roll http://www.hisnibs.com/pen_rolls.htm with the purchase of a
regular $25.00 8-pen fabric/poly pen roll (in many different patterns).

Conklin Herringbone 2 series

Let me start by saying that I'm taking orders for these pens this weekend --
as I only have a few in stock -- and will place your order on Monday (I'm
told that all colors are finally in stock and they usually reach me within a

Although still called the Conklin Herringbone, I've decided to add '2' to
its name, to distinguish it from its earlier iteration -- which can be seen
here. The new pen's dimensions are a bit slimmer than the original, but
these are still oversized pens at 5-1/2" capped, 6-1/2" posted and 5" with
cap held aside. As Conklin states:

"Completely redesigned from the ground up, the all-new Conklin Herringbone
series combines vintage appeal with contemporary style and elegance. The
distinctive herringbone pattern is etched deep into airplane-grade aluminum,
allowing the writer to feel the textured surface through multiple coats of
lacquer. The new slimmer profile fits comfortably into any hand, perfectly
weighted and balanced for even the longest writing sessions. A new,
all-black nib was designed expressly for the three models sporting black
trim and is available in our three traditional point sizes (F, M, Stub).
Fill with a rainbow of ink choices via the included converter system or
standard international cartridges. The six striking colors are available in
either twist-action ballpoint or capped rollerball."

Crocodile Shimmering Jewel

Ok, first the name. The 'shimmering' comes for the material used for the cap
and barrel. The 'jewel' comes from the little ruby or sapphire on the cap's

These are slender pens, measuring 5-5/8" capped, 5-3/4" posted (if you
can...more on that below), and 4-1/2" with cap held aside.

Due to the severe taper of the barrel-end, posting the cap on these pens is
quite problematic. A few most easily. A few more post with a 'twist and
push' motion. The majority don't really post at all. Fortunately, for those
of us that don't post anyway, the pen's length is sufficient for comfortable

You may have noticed that the model comes with one of two nib styles. I
would rate the western steel-nibbed one as being a typical western medium.
The Chinese calligraphy nib has a variety of widths, by the nature of its

Lai Yee's pen roll sale

From now through the end of January, with the purchase of an 8-pen fabric
pen roll (any pattern), Lai Yee is offering a 6 or 10-pen poly roll in your
choice of black or purple -- for free.

So, when ordering by dropping us an email at orders@hisnibs.com, just let us
know which $25.00 8-pen fabric pen roll you'd like, as well as which free
6-pen or 10-pen poly you'd like (please also specify black or purple).

Protect your precious pens at home or while traveling -- in style!

Monteverde Regatta -- retired

Regular readers of this newsletter will remember that I purchased a large
quantity of the fabulous magnetic Regatta pens several months ago, when I
learned that the current iteration had been retired and ceased production.

I've been selling them steadily ever since and only a few of the
Chrome/Black version remain as I write this. Monteverde has totally depleted
their stock.

Whether or not you're interested in purchasing one of the remaining pens,
you might find this video http://youtu.be/NJJDuQFolJE of interest, in which
I introduce the then new version of the Regatta. Perhaps it will whet your
appetite for the new colors coming out soon.

Conklin Glider -- retired

Like the Monteverde Regatta, the Conklin Glider has been retired by YAFA
(the parent company of both) to make room for new models.

Conklin is now out-of-stock and as I write this, I have just a few of the
pens in the Coral color so act now if you want to add one of these really
neat pens to your collection.

On the blog...Dolphin rescue caught on underwater camera

Some of you know of my lifelong interest
http://hisnibs.blogspot.com/2004/08/beam-me-in-scotty.html in Cetaceans
(basically dolphins and whales). A friend recently alerted me to the video
linked below.

"An underwater camera has captured the moment a dolphin that became
entangled in a fishing line was freed by a diver in Hawaii.
Martina Wing, who filmed the footage, said that the dolphin seemed to
"communicate" with the diver to ask for help.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast's Jon Kay and Louise Minchin from Hawaii, she
described the experience as "mind-blowing".
