My dad handed me a Waterman #54 pen today, and said he found it "among a box of old car parts". Man, was that a cool surprise! I do not own anything this old!
This pen has some "gunk" on it, but it appears to be intact with no cracks. The nib is another story (someone ground the iridium off it, and the tines are split). I'll need to get a #4 nib sometime, but for now worried about protecting the barrel and cap finish. What is the best solvent for hard rubber pens? This thing was sitting in a box of greasy car parts for who knows how long!

scrub it with simchrome & a toothbrush. Then a quick rinse in room temp water (dry immediately) then hit it with some good Renaissance wax. Sitting in the greasy box for ??? years the finish will probably look like an ass sam'mich. To reblacken use some of syds pensbury manor HR dye.

While I don't generally care for MB anything their nibs are pretty sweet. I recall a 149 with a broad stub I purchased for a client years ago. I was really glad for the client who got it, but seriously sad to see it have to leave.
What is the asking price for the MB nib? Is it that much more to have the original repaired?
Something else that just occurred to me. A while back didn't they sue a few people that did custom work on them? Will they do the same over their nibs in other pens? Will any of the nibmeisters/re-tipping services go near it for fear of legal issues?
So back on point, what I would do
You have the original but damaged nib. Get pics, send them to Greg Minushkin. The man is an artist w/ nibs.
IMHO, reblacken the pen, get Greg to re-tip it (Think wild, something like a sharp BB stub!) and have another "dad" pen to enjoy.

The pen is actually not too bad! The cap is the part that has the crud on it! (Loved the analogy though Dennis!)
As for the nib, can a #5 nib work on this as well? Was the #4 (size?) only for this model. The pen has "54" marked at the barrel end. Looks good considering! I believe I read that the trim is GF (looks like it will clean up!)
I would want the correct nib on it, or something close still from Waterman.
