Parker Vac/51 Vac mechanism removal
Permalink Closed

OK guys!

This year, I have become more brave when it comes to pen repair!
I learned how to do a Snorkel repair earlier this year.

Now, I am looking to tackle Vacs! I am looking for help on the proper way to remove the vac mechanism. I do have a vac tool similar to those that are sold through Tryphon.
I have both a 51 Vac, and a Standard Vac. I have seen Richard's diagrams on his reference pages as well. Any guidance, or site(s) info on the process of removing the back (Vac) section of these pens would help!

Thanks!
Frank

Update:

OK, I have taken the 51 Vac completely apart! No problems with that one!
I realized that I had to "push" the unit out after I loosened the retaining screw in the back.
Next is the Diaphragm replacement- stay tuned!

The Vac, on the other hand, is another problem. I see now that the retaining screw on that one is actually stripped. I have been trying to take that one off for a couple of days now.
I hope that was not my doing! smile.gif

No worries though, as I am heading to DC next week, I'm sure I can get a replacement.
The big issue now is how to get the damaged one out w/o damaging the rest of the pen.....

Well Shawn!

I will admit I had to look up with that thing was...
(Should have known about the computer disk applications!)

But, the retaining nut is aluminum, isn't it?

oh, I don't know. I've never handled one. Just trying to be helpful. It was the first thing that popped into my head, though. You could epoxy a screwdriver to it and then pull it out. Or super glue. Some kind of adhesive that's easy to remove without damaging the screw. Might work?

No, I appreciate it!
I did not point out that the "metal" was aluminum!
This is a pre-war (WWII) vac that has a metal speedline filler.

Those are some good ideas! I may still rely on the pros for this job though!
I am still working on the 51 though.

Thanks!

I wanted to update this thread to say that Ron Z took care of both pens for me at DC!
I think I'm going to stay with my original idea to only be able to fix all pens
other than Vacs! (LOL)
