Hi, I am a newbe when it comes to repairing fountain pens, but I can repair them. My question is; is there a trick when it comes to getting the nib and feed back in the way it was before I removed it. It seems that when I take them out they fit nicely but when I put them back it the nib and feed don't fit all the way back up due to snugness issues. Do you use a silicone to help the feed slide up and in?
On older pens, the section has often deformed slightly to conform to the shape of the nib and feed. Before you knock out the feed, mark where the centre of the nib lines up with the section, and when it comes to reassembly put it back where it was before. Slips in easier that way.
Around the feed and section is a bad place to get grease, as it's very difficult to flush it out of there again. You can use dish soap as a lubricant, though. Strong fingers help too!
on my old sheaffer i used a hair dryer to warm the section a bit before reinserting the feed/nib. wouldn't go in at all to went right in. and when the section cooled it shrank back down and made a nice tight fit again. easy peesy.
I was restoring a 1920 Sheaffer's Jade White dot. But I have already completed it, just that the nib is about 1/8 of the way too far out from where it was originally. It's my pen so I can deal with it. One of these day's I will take it back apart and try heating the section up a bit and then try refitting the feed and nib to see if it goes in further. What do you think of this method?
