Shellac tidbits

Someone, somewhere on one of the pen forums, recently asked about the longevity of shellac and how to tell when it's gone bad (I didn't realize it would, but as it's an organic product for the most part, I should have known ...).

For the most part: http://www.shellac.net/faq.html

I also inquired of Zinsser (a Rust-Oleum brand, and probably the most readily available shellac in the US) regarding its shelf life, and was told that an unopened container of Zinsser shellac will be good for a minimum of three years from the date stamped on the can.

Just thought I would share that.

Is the standard coating shellac the same as the orange shellac used in pen repair? I would think that the pen version would have a thicker consistency.

It's the same stuff: a "2 lb cut" (two pounds of shellac flakes to a gallon of alcohol). Several of the well-known pen doctors have mentioned using precisely this product.

It just doesn't seem like it should be easy enough to work with at that ratio but I'm use to teflon and graphite for seals.
