With my grandmother's passing I am rediscovering fountain pens... and I have a huge journey ahead of me! For a start I don't think I can get replacement sacs here in New Zealand very easily :(
Anyway- my first real intro to a live fountain pen I was 13, in school and one of my teachers commented that with my bad handwriting I needed to rewrite my whole year's work. I promptly went home and 'borrowed' my dad's old Platignum with heavy, solid silver cap on the basis of "if it's messy I can blame the pen"
and then discovered that my handwriting was improving... naturally
So now I am trying to sort through her old pens and find one I can get working. I currently have:
dark green platignum varsity pressmatic- newer and the cap reminds me of the brushed stainless era of Parkers (shudder)
black plastic platignum regal
black plastic osmiroid 75
and just found:
pale blue wearever with lightweight lid and clear ink feeder thingy behind the nib
The wearever I'd love to get going, but I think it needs somewhere for the ink to go! ;) It has no filler levers or mechanism, so might it take a cartrige or does it need a sac and get squeezed by hand?
Pen Sac Company ( http://www.pensacs.com/index.html ) ships internationally, though you'd need to buy a LOT of sacs to make UPS worth the expense (registered first class mail is considerably less expensive)!
Yes, this is a Wearever Cartridge Pen! All you need is a cartridge that you can refill. Just a little polish, soak the nib in water to make sure it's clean, and you're good to go!
SOMEbody here has carts to spare! ;)

I soaked the whole thing in parts in warm water, and rinsed it repeatedly- the clear plastic feeder thingy is nice and clear again, although I have a sneaky feeling I'm supposed to remove it and the nib and get the gunk that generally builds up in those inaccessable places. Does that part unscrew or is it a friction-hold-your-mouth-the-right-way kinda undo?
Do they take any of the more modern cartridges? It seems like a more modern pen, going by the look of it, rather than one of those really old ones
Suggestions on polishing? Stuff to avoid? Preferred methods? Oh, and the aluminium cap has tiny bug-track-like lines on it, I guess it is some sort of corrosion from neglect.
New Zealand is not that far away, when pens are concerned! I live in the exact opposite of your country, the straight boot in the middle of the Mediterranean sea...
I can help out some on the wearever info. I used to be a psychotic wearever collector.
Thats a Wearever pioneer from the 1960's. The feed/nib are simply friction set, soak the section in some slightly higher than room temp. water for 5 minutes or so, then pull them out. An old toothbrush will be perfect to use with some warm soapy water on the feed & underside of the nib. floss the tines with a piece of paper thin sheet brass, clean the section with a cotton swab. reset everything & your golden.
That being a cartridge pen,. you may be able to fill the barrel directly. check the barrel end for an air hole. if none exist, a bit of silicon grease on the section threads makes this a fast & east eye dropper filler. No cart needed. HOWEVER. if there is a vent hole, you'll have to source a cartridge. i juat mailed my last ones off or I'd kick a couple your way.

Actually now I think about it my grandmother (or whoever she got the pen off) had used it without any cartridge... there was a very large blue cloud when I soaked it then undid the barrel ;)
It doesn't have a breather hole so I'll probably just go that way, although the possibility of leaks kinda makes me nervous
Hey Frank, you do Sheaffer's pens with cartridges, I'd bought a sweet one from you. The Sheaffer's cartridges have pretty large holes, but they get help seating against the sections when the barrel is screwed back on and hold them firmly against the section backs. Have you tried fitting a long Sheaffer's cartridge to those Wearevers? I've been just wondering if they'd work.

The problem with The Sheaffer carts in they can get stuck in the Wearever barrels. People do use them; the openings of the cart are the right size, but the cart is too wide!
