What pen is this?
Permalink Closed

So how about a variation on the theme, less a search for knowledge and more "Twenty-Questions".

I will describe a pen to the best of my ability, and only misdirect apurpose. Specific identifying type or logos on the pen will not be mentioned, for example the manufacturers name will NOT be given if imprinted on the pen. That would make it too easy.

Members can ask any questions and I must answer honestly, although I will feel free to couch my answer in the format that will give the least help to the questioner.

Whoever guesses the make and model would then present the next example.

So here is the first pen, one I call Understated Elegance.

I am about 5 ¼" long when capped and about a ¼" longer when posted.

I have a snap cap.

I am a brass pen with black lacquer and a gold plated band at the cap mouth, crown, base of body, section end and between the body and section.

My nib is 14 K and also marked 585, has no breather hole and wraps around the feed.

I come only as a Cartridge/Converter model.

The 180 was neat, but that's not it. There is a vague connection though between many Parkers and this pen, something they do have in common.

Hmm ok,

Vintage or modern. (pre/post 1980) or still in production?

It is post 1980 and still in production although the most recent version does have slight (very slight) differences.

This sounds like a Sheaffer inlaid nib-
I thought it may have been a Crest type model at first,
but they are discontinued.

Two other great pens but not this one. Hint, this one uses international cartridges.

Reviewing the hints so far:

So here is the first pen, one I call Understated Elegance.

I am about 5 ¼" long when capped and about a ¼" longer when posted.

I have a snap cap.

I am a brass pen with black lacquer and a gold plated band at the cap mouth, crown, base of body, section end and between the body and section.

My nib is 14 K and also marked 585, has no breather hole and wraps around the feed.

I come only as a Cartridge/Converter model.

There is a connection between many Parkers and this pen.

It uses standard International Cartridges and Converter.

New hints.

The Sheaffer Triumph nib formed a full circle while this nib wraps around the feed but has a gap at the bottom.

Waterman and Parker are two of the great old American Pen manufacturers. What do they have in common?

What else might they have in common with this pen? Specifically, some text that might be found on a Waterman LeMan or a Parker 75 is found on this pen.

Well, in chat the other night Grimakis guessed the pen. It was my ST Dupont black lacquer Olympio. It's one of the mid sized Olympios and a dream to write with. It has a fine 14c nib that is perhaps the smoothest fine nib I own.

Great! We need to get George (Grimikas) on board here to
keep this going!

If you want to know what good pen really is try to look at this one and compare what makes the difference. Pelikan pen.
