Welty Pen from the City of Big Shoulders

As a native Chicagoan, I was jazzed to see this old nail (another Santa Fe Pen Shop find) . . . .

This pen looked to be gold filled, with a fair amount of brassing -- sure enough, the barrel is marked "

Welty's
Chicago
1/20 GOLD FILLED PAT. PEND.

The Clip is marked PATD, though I remain a bit curious as to what, exactly, might be patented here -- the clip, lever filler, feed, all look pretty straight forward . . . .

The nib shows some signs of tough duty, and a less-than wonderful repair (likely consisting of bending more or less back to shape), and is marked:

WELTY'S
FOUNTAIN
PEN
2

It's a good little writer, though (if just a mite scratchy -- I may take it to a fine oilstone), just about as flexy as my Namiki Flacon . . . . .

I've not seen many other Welty's, and though you folks might enjoy a gander.

Cheers!

A friend brought me a Weltys thats been in her fsmily since her grandmother got it as a young girlto. She asked me iabout it and if there was any chance to restore it. I scooped it up and in less than 45 minutes had it back in service and looking very good. The full flex nib was a pure joy to play with. The look on her face when she got to be the first person, since her mother several decades before, to ink it up and give it the first stroke. That was all the payment I asked for other than a promise that she use it and not sock it away in a drawer somewhere.
