The new Edison Herald
Permalink Closed

My new Edison Herald Pen arrived from Brian Gray this morning.  At my request, he was able to get some mandarin yellow stock from Howard Levy recently from which to produce a couple of the new Heralds.  IMHO, he did a very nice job.  I had him fit my pen with a gold clip to match the buttery smooth 14K Bock optional nib he offers.  Another choice I made on the pen was to have it fitted with a converter; he could have also done it as an eyedropper, however knowing the vulnerability of yellow material to stain, I opted for the former.

Two things that could have improved the pen were:

a) a matching mandarin yellow section rather than the black.
b) some kind of marking on the pen or clip to designate the maker/model.  As received, there is no way to identify it.  I have conveyed these recommendations to Brian.

Dimensions:

Length (capped) - 150mm
Length (unposted) - 124mm (pen cap not designed to be posted)
Cap Diameter: 15mm
Body Diameter: 13mm
Clip Length: 45mm
Nib: Bock Medium 14K (Germany) - just tested - lays down a nice medium line with slight to moderate flex with a flow wetness of about 7.5 - 8 out of 10 using PR Lake Placid Blue.

Overall, I am very pleased to add this pen to my collection:  Sorry for the bad photos.

Spoke to him about it. As soon as he gets some more yellow stock, he promised to make me a yellow section for it.

My Herald now has a matching yellow section. Brian will be shipping the pen back to me this week - I'll post new photo of it as soon as it arrives.

Jack,
I certainly agree...a makers mark at least. I
noticed that immediatly. But then what's in a
name...well 20 years from now some fellow
writing with it won't have to say "I wonder who
made this fine writing instrument". I must say
because of you i'm looking at custom pens now,
everyone should have at least one.

Here's the promised photo of the Edison Hearald with the refitted Yellow nib section.  Definitely an improvement over the black section, IMHO.

Nice jack!

I got to see Brian's work at the Philly Pen Show!
The pens he makes are awesome. I am looking forward to buying one
sometime soon! You will not find this quality in any kit pen, nor any other
custom pen maker for the money!

Hey Frank,

The money is the key. For the quality of similar work from some of the other wonderful pen makers out there such as Brad Torelli, Paul Rossi, Bruno Corsini, Joe Cali, Chris Thpmpson, etc., one would have to spend at least double to four times what Brian charges for his work, not to mention his quick turnaroundand the ability to watch him make it on his webcam broadcasts.

I just heard that Brian is planning on making a piston-filler pen!
I may have to save up for that!

Love the new look. Much cleaner in my book.

I'm amazed at how fast Brian is growing in popularity. well possibly not too taken aback. The boys got his guano together .

WOW, the finished produce is really beautiful! See? I have now learned, thanks to you folks, that there are pen makers out there who are currently doing custom work. But...I'll be willing to bet that this is a very pricy thing to get into, right?

There are several folks out there doing custom work & not all are as expensive as you may think.

If you want to experience pen sensory overload, google Brad Torelli & his 51's. OM~GAWD! that boy has some niiiice pens
