LAMY ink flow
Permalink Closed

Good morning!

I have a question about my LAMY 2000, F nib.  I've had this since the 1970s and have had no issues with it until I filled it recently.  The pen had been sitting idle for quite a while (years).

The problem is that ink flow varies from VERY heavy (almost blobbing) to VERY dry over the space of a few lines.  The cycle repeats consistently.

The problem is much worse with inks like Noodlers Dark Tulip and better with LAMY ink such as blue-black, but it is still there.

Its almost like I have a slow air leak somewhere, but I cannot find anything obvious.  Any thoughts?

It sounds to me as if you have some clogging issues.

If you have an Ultrasonic Cleaner, you can put the section/nib/feed in the UC for a few minutes and see what comes out.

Another approach would be to mix a household (non-sudsing) ammonia/water solution - roughly 10% Ammonia,90% Water - and fill the pen, let it set for a few hours and then see what flushes out. This will need to be repeated if you find much ink in the pen. Be sure, of course, to flush well with clear water.

You can also do the Ammonia/water flush through the section alone.

I'm making the assumption you know the basics of breaking down the 2000. While you have the section off, it doesn't hurt to lubricate the piston with a tiny bit of pure silicon grease.

If it is an air leak issue, you should lubricate the barrel/section threads with a bit of silicon grease to see if that helps.  I believe some 2000's have an "o"ring in the barrel/section interface - it never hurts to lubricate the "o"ring - again, with pure silicon grease.

Thanks for the reply.  I took the pen apart last night and put the section/feed/nib in the ultrasonic.  I had expected a lot of dried ink to come out, but almost nothing did.

Maybe I'll try a longer soak per your suggestion.

By the way, I talked to LAMY repair at Filofax about this.  They said that they would refurb the pen for $7.50 shipping charge.  If a refurb won't fix it, they'll give me a new one.  If I don't have results soon, I think I'll just let them take care of it.

Tom,

I highly recommend Lamy's service through Filofax. I had a 2000 with a bad piston and they serviced it for the $7.50 no questions asked. The barrel was replaced along with a new feed. I bought the pen on Ebay and had no box or papers but that wasn't a problem.

Their service was good and fast.

I agree with Kelly on this one. $7.50 for a refurb or new pen. How can you lose.
