Happy Birthday to the King!
January 4th, 2008

As I'm sure all of you are aware, January 8
marks the birthday of the King. Now no need
to send lots of presents...I have everything
I need.

Oh wait. You thought I was talking about the
other King? I see. Well, in
recognition of the 8th also being the
birthday of Elvis....Lai Yee has found
material for a pen wrap just for him. I guess
it's deserved. Graceland is rumored to bring
in a few more tourist dollars than His
Nibs'
Palace.

For those of you joining us at the Philly Pen
Show starting January 25th, if you are
planning to purchase pen rolls once you
arrive, please drop us an email now so that
Lai Yee can start making the pattern(s) you'd
like...ready for you to pick up at the show.

I also plan on bringing a good supply of the
Duke/Uranus Multifunction pens...but my
supply is dwindling fast...and re-supply
doesn't look promising.

I hope that more of the Delta Israel 60th
Anniversary pens will have arrived from Italy
in time for the pen show. It sounds like it
will be a close call.

We have quite an unusual tribute to the King
here, as the pattern relates to items from
Elvis Presley's stint in the U.S. Army!

Shown are his Selective Service registration,
Certificate of Service, Honorable Discharge
document...even his dog tags!

While we're on the subject of honoring
veterans, the December 28th entry on my
weblog has a link to a PBS video of my good
friend Kurt Gimson, who was stationed in the
Pacific theater during WWII. The video link

Kurt called me just a few hours before I
wrote this, and I was thrilled to learn that
he's sending me a copy of the diary he kept
during the war...and which is mentioned in
the video. Sorry to say, he informed me that
he mostly used a typewriter, and not a
fountain pen, to record it!

Multifunction pen



The usual multifunction pen from Asia has a
fountain pen on one end, and a ballpoint on
the other. Here's a truly unique variation on
that theme. This pen has a liquid-ink
rollerball on one end, and a Chinese
calligraphy 'brush' on the other!

Unscrewing the cap above the clip reveals a
super-smooth rollerball, fed by liquid ink.
The metal tip allows for the most demanding
writing, from the Sunday crossword puzzle to
multi-part forms. But, unlike the pasty 'ink'
used in a conventional ballpoint, this
liquid-ink rollerball provides for a smooth,
skip-free writing experience, allowing for a
quick note -- or an extended writing session.

Pulling off the cap from the other end of the
pen reveals the real surprise however, a
self-contained, flexible calligraphy 'brush',
fed from the same ink source as the
rollerball! Made of a soft, sponge-like
material, the faux-brush allows for the
writing of traditional Chinese characters (or
Japanese 'kanji'), with a fidelity as close
to using a real calligraphy brush and ink
stone as I've seen.

Delta's Israel 60th Anniversary pens



In 1948 the nation of Israel declared
independence and in 2008 Israel celebrates
its 60th anniversary.

The Israel60 collection offers 948 fountain
pens with particulars in vermeil (.925
sterling silver gold-plated) featuring the
lateral lever filling system. It offers also
1948 fountain pens and 1948
ballpens/rollerballs, both with trimmings in
sterling silver with aged finish. The
Limited Edition fountain pen features a
converter or cartridge (threaded) filling
system and the rollers are easily convertible
into ball pens.
