Sheaffer vacuum-fill

Hi all,

I am currently working in a vacuum-fill Sheaffer with Triumph nib. Not sure about the exact model, it is stripped celluloid (light brown or amber), quite small, with all-metal cap.


The question is: I have already took apart the top part (small cap on top) and nib-feed assembly. But the top (rod) seal doesn't come off, and the rod assembly is unable to go through the nib+feed hole.

What should I do?

Martin,

I may be confused, and this is probably only a semantics problem. This is a Snork (rod coming out of feed under nib)? It is probably a snorkel from what you have been describing. Is the pen completely apart yet?
If you are unable to get the "rod" back through the opening up front, then I would guess that the point seal has hardened, and it will not allow it to pass through no more. You should be able to unscrew the nib from the section up front. This point seal is a gasket that seals the air gap between the nib and the section. I was discussing this seal myself not too long ago either in this forum, or at "the workbench" here.

Thanks, Frank. But it is not a Snorkel/Touchdown. It is a sacless vacuum system used by Onoto, Sheaffer, Eversharp and others.

I got confused about the "rod" detail/information.
So, this is a vac ("Balance") type model with a conical (Triumph) nib?

How 'bout a pic? I'd like to see that!

Martin,

OK, this is a later model (Triumph nib) vac filler ("Balance") Sheaffer!
This is an early/mid 40's (Late Balance/Pre-TD) model.
I have not seen these apart myself, but I'm sure there is a seal (diaphragm) type piece that has probably hardened up in there. I would suggest soaking it in water overnight to see if it helps to loosen the rod (vac) mechanism.
Someone here with more knowledge of these can help.
This is why I usually stick to repairing sac type pens!

The rod and piston come out the feed end. There is also a seal up at the blind cap end.

Some years ago Stylophiles Magazine did an article on Father Terry where they showed some of Fr Terry's drawings. Since then better methods and materials have been found but I still think sending it to one of the better repair folk is a good idea.

There are few pens more enjoyable then a Sheaffer Vacfil though so get that puppy up and working.

Hi all,

I haven't succeeded with this $& piece!! I have heated this (hairdryer), grabbed from the inside (rubber wrapped screwdriver), but it remains glued. I have also tried hammering from the inside with a small tube, so as to disassemble this from the top, but nothing happened either. What would your next best option be?

The small plastic #$%& nipple is maybe destroyed. Though it looks like only one piece, I have seen some flex on the outside celluloid during my heated tries, and the sound was ... eehhmm .... worrying. Does anyone have the specs (size, screws) for this piece? I will most probably need to have it duplicated in a lathe.

Guess what! I won a bid a few days ago and just went to get it: IT'S ABOUT THE SAME $&%# PEN!!!!!

On top the "new" set, and the one I was referring to lately at the bottom. The "new" one in the set is exactly the same size and colour, but with larger nib and plastic cap. Not sure what this means. Both of them marked with the same "1000" in the body.

The "new" one fills about half the pen body. Not right, but enough for what I write usually. I don't know if I want to start again with the whole thing!

i'm gonna use mine as an ED while i wait on gaskets/o rings/etc to show up.

got the thing completely apart. it's been lots of fun, too.

can't wait to get it back together again. this is gonna save me $40 plus shipping which is a plus.
