Carene: leaks 'n' squeaks
Permalink Closed

Always has.

This is a tomato-red Carene, M nib, purchased from an art supply store about ten years ago, maybe longer, and was my first big-ticket pen.

But since day one, it has leaked and squeaked.

I love the look and feel of the pen and apart from the squeak, it writes well enough.  But the leak always occurs in the same spot, the right-hand 'horn' of the inlaid nib (with nib pointing north).  And when I use the pen I have an ink dot on my thumb in the same spot, time after time.

Any ideas for a cause or solution?  Anyone with similar problems?

Thanks.

It sounds like the nib has become 'unseated' from the section. Shoot it my way and I'll get it squared away for you. My info/phone number are in my profile.

I LOVE my Carene's too. Balance, aesthetics, dead on reliable whats not to love about these!

Sure. The nib is not sealed. Someone like Richard Binder could solve both the leak and squeek.

Hmmm.... I may be attending a pen show where nibmeisters are present.

Is this nib-sealage thingie a long involved repair?

not hard or laborious at all. A little diluted shellac to wick down into the nib seat is all that's needed. A quick pass or 3 on the micromesh will take care of the squeaky nib as well.

What pen show are you considering?

The Philly show is Jan 22-24 & Atlanta is April 9-11 Those are the only 2 East coast shows I know off the top of my head. I THINK DC is in august.

In NY.

Y'know (hijacks own thread), I really enjoyed the show, though it was not quite what I expected. I thought there would be more contemporary pens on display/for sale, and paper, and more inks. Just one dealer had modern inks for sale.
