Hi everybody.  I'm brand new here.

 

I have a question about replacing J Bars on lever filling pens.  I've recently been picking up some fine old pens on ebay, and I've learned the basics of replacing bladders on standard lever filling pens.  But many of the J Bars I run into are weak or fail to spring back, probably from some kind of metal fatigue over time.  J Bars seem hard to come by other than cannabalizing other pens.  It seems to me there should be a common object you can get in a hard ware store that would replace a springy strip of metal.  Any ideas to go the MacGiver route?  It seems to me a piece of an old clock mainspring might work.  Anybody done this before?

J bars are pretty common. I'd suggest picking up a couple of larger lots of low end pens for 'organ donation'. Other than that, talk to Martin at woodbin http://www.woodbin.ca/ & order a few from him. Me I'd go the lot route, you'll be picking up pens, & learning more every time you handle them. Also, in the repair forum, I posted my FP repair dvd/videos for everyone to use.
