How do you measure line thickness
Permalink Closed

I'm making a database of my pens while my little collection isn't unwieldy yet. For flexible nibs, I can't tell what thickness is considered broad, double broad, or triple broad. And some nibs aren't labeled. What thickness is considered EF, F, etc.?

Also, sometimes sellers say F-B or F-BB and post a writing sample and these vary widely from seller to seller, so I really don't know if the description is accurate.

Psst... it's so quiet in here.  So... how was the fourth of July? biggrin

Independence Day was pretty low-key here, just a couple of medium firework shells and a little sporadic light-weapons fire. Oh, and the official City display which I'd be able to see from my house if it weren't for a couple of tall trees.

My best recommendation for your line widths is to measure them, using the same ink in every pen and the same paper. Your records will be most accurate that way, vs. the maker/dealer descriptions.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to see how I can manage that seeing as how my pens have different inks in them right now.

I vaguely recall fourth of July celebrations from when my family was living in NY. It seemed quite festive. Our noisiest holiday is December 31. EVERYONE has fireworks. I don't actually enjoy it because the after-smoke is as thick as fog and some of the firecrackers are really, really loud. But the food is always good. biggrin
