The Savage Pen Company now taking orders
Permalink Closed

Introducing The Savage Pen Company and it's first model, Attrition.

Material: Hard rubber/Celluloid. Any color/pattern sold by AmericanArtPlastics.com
Capped Length: 6 1/2"
Posted: 7 3/4"
OD cap/Barrel: 3/4" (19mm)
Section width approx .65" (approx. 16.mm)
Nib: Monotone Schmidt SS nib/feed unit in F,M or B.
Filling system: Eye dropper filler.
Ink volume: 8ML! Thats a LOT of ink gang.
Ink chamber: Medical grade Boroscilliate/PYREX glass.

**Questions and comments I've received.**

"Despite the large capacity it seems a manageable size for use."

It is indeed. Everyone thats held it so far has found it relatively lightweight & comfortable.

"I like the four pillars rather than a solid chamber surrounding the glass. i assume the pyrex is fairly unbreakable and lightweight?"

Correct, the walls are thin & dont have much mass so it's light & the Pyrex is really durable stuff.

"Did you use it to deal with the eye dropper blobbing problem?"

I did. Your hand/skin never come into contact with the vial so heat transference ~ ink blobbing isn't a problem.

"What's the length?"

Capped Length: 6 1/2"
Posted: 7 3/4"

"...And what materials do you have available besides the white (which I kind of like)?"

Hard Rubber and Celluloid. I am buying from Americanartplastics.com so I can make a pen out of any material they sell. I can also use white or black Delrin. FWIW, Delrin is almost impossible to stain.

"Are the "pillars" that run the length of the pen meant to be completely parallel and uniform width, or (as it appears in your pic) more free-form/naturalistic?"

On the pen in the pic, it was both, I was trying different ink window ideas. The production models have straight and uniform 'pillars', I call them ribs.

"How long will you be offering the pre-order price?"

Until May 12th when the Chicago Pen Show starts.

"Can the section be made out of the same (American Art Plastics celluloid or HR) material the rest of the pen is?"

Sure can. I can use any material color/combo, as well as custom shape the section to your specs. free of charge.

"What other nibs or nib/feeds would fit in the pen? or, asked a different way, do you have a feel for the size of the nib relative to vintage nibs? (I would love to put an old Waterman nib- size 5 maybe? in this pen.)"

I can custom fit almost any nib, vintage or modern into these pens. This is a very large pen, so trying to fit something like a Wahl #0, while possible, may not be so practical. I'll need you to provide the nib & feed of course. There will be no up charge for the custom mounting.

"Are there any of the AAP materials that are not well suited to machining for this model?"

Currently AAP only sells HR & celluloid. I have to say that their selections are both first class all around, so I believe it will be able to stand up to the ages.

***Disclaimer: I'm in no way connected with AAP other than being a very happy customer.

The pen shown below is made from white Delrin, Yours will be in whatever color, pattern or material you choose from the selections found at Americanartplastics.com.

Retail/show price: $300
Preorder price: $250

Questions from an email I got, hopefully this will answer some questions you may have.
1. Are the "pillars" that run the length of the pen meant to be completely parallel and uniform width, or (as it appears in your pic) more free-form/naturalistic?

On the pen in the pic, it was both, I was trying different ink window ideas. In the production models they are straight and uniform.

2. how long will you be offering the pre-order price?
Until May 12th when the Chicago Pen Show starts
3. can the section be made out of the same (American Art Plastics celluloid or HR) material the rest of the pen is?
Sure can
4. What other nibs or nib/feeds would fit in the pen?  or, asked a different way, do you have a feel for the size of the nib relative to vintage nibs?   (I would love to put an old Waterman nib- size 5 maybe? in this pen.)

I can custom fit any nib vintage or modern into these pens. I'll need you to provide the nib & feed.

5. Are there any of the AAP materials that are not well suited to machining for this model?  It seems that those long, thin pillars might be tricky either to machine, or to remain stable over time.
AAP only sells HR & celluloid. They say that the HR is twice as dense as vintage HR so I believe it will be able to stand up to the ages. You have no idea what a PITA the ink windows were to cut.

The pen has a great look! The big window is something nice and creative at the same time.

Just as a constructive criticism from my side:

1- The top part ("window-less") looks kind of big in the pic. It is kind of an oversize Pelikan / MBlanc knob. If there is not any mechanical or design reason for it to be so long I would shorten it a little bit.

2- I am not sure if it is the pen or the picture, but it seems that the pen is quite big but the nib is kind of small.

I can't spend $200 in pens right now, but besides the above, the pen looks wonderful.

Just MHO

Martin

I suspect the "knob" at the butt contains a cushion for the glass reservoir, and is also sized to allow the cap to post. Pretty much any nib is going to look small on that humungous pen, though. smile.gif

Dennis, you said that cutting the slots is a PITA; could you expand on that a bit? What's your process, and what makes it such a pain?

"I suspect the "knob" at the butt contains a cushion for the glass reservoir, and is also sized to allow the cap to post."

Yep

"Pretty much any nib is going to look small on that humungous pen, though."

Yep, it would take an enormous nib to 'match the scale' if you take my meaning. The nib units I'm using are Schmidt. I'd say around the M600 size or so. Possibly a tad larger.

"Dennis, you said that cutting the slots is a PITA; could you expand on that a bit? What's your process, and what makes it such a pain? "

I bought a milling vice to use with my drill press and end mills. It's too big to fit properly so i had to take off the bottom and use a couple of clamps to get it set to the table. So rather than an x y axis, I now only have an x axis. the drill press doesnt have a lock to keep the spindle in the 'down' position, so i have to hold it as I'm turning the milling vice thats holding pen.

It wouldn't be so much of a pain if I had a better set up and or better equipment.

I've seen vises mounted on the cross slides of lathes, and with the end mill in the chuck/collet, you have a much more rigid setup than with a drill press. Mount your vise so your current X axis is vertical, and your cross slide becomes your Y axis. The saddle, of course, is Z. You may need an angle plate to mount the vise, though.

Our beginnings as human beings go back to two great achievements, the creation of the first tools-- axes and simple blades made of stone, obsidian and flint--and the first art--handprints and paintings on cave walls, animals carved from bone, and marks and symbols that would later become writing. We call these times beyond history "savage" or "primitive," but when we hold a beautifully carved stone tool we know we are touching elegance and our deepest roots.

Now Savage Pens re connects us to the roots of writing, art and the beginning of man. Lovingly made with the same materials our earliest pen crafting ancestors used. Created at the highest standards of the pen-maker's art using the best of modern technology, With each of these unique hand-made pens we hope to join you to the past and future of humanity.

Introducing The Savage Pen Company and it's first model, Attrition.

Material: Black/white Delrin, Hard Rubber and Celluloid. See AmericanArtPlastics.com for color/pattern material.

Capped Length: 6 1/2"

Posted: 7 3/4"

OD cap/Barrel: 3/4" (19mm)

Section width approx .65" (approx. 16.mm) I can customize the section girth per the buyers request.

Nib: Monotone Schmidt SS nib/feed unit in F,M or B. I will gladly custom fit a nib and feed that you supply at no extra charge. (see below)

Even posted the pen has a wonderful balance.

"I like the four pillars rather than a solid chamber surrounding the glass. I assume the pyrex is fairly unbreakable and lightweight?"

Correct, the walls are thin & dont have much mass so it's light & the Pyrex is really durable stuff. Should your vial ever break, let me know & I'll get a replacement off to you at no charge.

"Did you use it to deal with the eye dropper blobbing problem?"

I did. Your hand/skin never come into contact with the vial so heat transference ~ ink blobbing isn't a problem.

"...And what materials do you have available besides the white (which I kind of like)?"

Hard Rubber and Celluloid. I am buying from Americanartplastics.com so I can make a pen out of any material they sell. I can also use white or black Delrin. FWIW, White Delrin is almost impossible to stain.

"Are the "pillars" that run the length of the pen meant to be completely parallel and uniform width, or (as it appears in your pic) more free-form/naturalistic?"

"Huge does not begin to describe that thing! It's like an ink reservoir with a nib."

LOL yeah it's a monster. Think Waterman #20, Parker Black Giant.

"Borosilicate glass (real Pyrex?) is durable and can take some knocking about, but it does break and can shatter if stressed."

One of the reasons I chose this material is for the durability. I've put these through some simple stress/durability tests. I've dropped it from 4' onto a hard wood floor, twisting/flex tests & all was well.

"Is that essentially a test tube in a Delrin holder with a seal screwed in the top (section) with a internal opening to accomodate a standard IPG nib/section/holder unit?"

Pretty much. I'm using first rate Schmidt nib/feed units. My intent was to keep it as simple and problem free as possible. There are less than 10 total parts to the pen.

"I like big pens, but I really wonder what I would do with something of that size and ink capacity. Since filling the pen is part of the hobby that I like (like filling the pipe, tamping the tobacco and fussing with the pack throughout the smoke was part of the attraction of pipe smoking years ago), it seems that these big capacity pens rob one of part of the fountain pen experience (IMHO)."

I see your point on the frequency of refilling. I have to admit that fussing with the pen/ink etc is part of the draw for me as well, but I also considered the folks who use ED's on a regular basis & have complained about the low ink volume. Another point to consider is you dont have to fill the pen to capacity. Honestly i only fill mine about 1/2-3/4 full, so I can see the ink running down the insides of the pryex vial. It's a pretty cool effect.

"i like the fact that it is a voluminous eyedropper....i personally would like and use the 8 ml size, especially since i would replace the generic nib with one of nathan's custom retips 3 mm or larger."

Thanks Viv. This beast combined with a thirsty 3mm nib...sounds like a perfect match.

"i also like the design of the pen, in that it is not just another torpedo pen."
Again, one of my reasons for the design, was to stand out from the crowd. IMHO, far too many of todays pens are all but carbon copies of one another. I want the person that buys my pens to expect something different than everything else on the market.

This may seem a bit silly & I hope it's never needed, but another feature of the pen I noticed was it can be used as a 'self defense' tool. It's size and design make it a decent kubaton. Should a worst case situation happen & the user is attacked, hold the pen by the cap and break it against the offender if possible. 8ML of ink will stain a bad guy pretty well.

***Disclaimer: I'm in no way connected with AAP other than being a very happy customer.

The pen shown below is made from white Delrin, Yours will be in whatever color, pattern or material you choose from the selections found at Americanartplastics.com.

Retail/show price: $300

Nah, nah ... The Supressor!

That perforated thing is a flash supressor. smile.gif

Hey, Dennis! How about some brighter images of the beastie? It's hard to see clearly in the video against your dark shirt.

Make it out of aluminum and give it conical ends, and you have a yawara stick there. I like the holes better versus the long slots: this has to be considerably less fragile, and protects the vial better.

"Mongo" perhaps?
"Beast" or "Behemoth" would work.
"Thumper" would also work.
"BHP" (Big Honkin' Pen) is another possibility.
Hmmm ... "Pierce?"
