Trying to find a community where Freedom of Speech is allowed
Permalink Closed

Hello Everyone,

In two days, it will be my one year anniversary of using fountain pens.  Since then, i've owned up to 27 at one time, ranging from pelikan to sailor to montblanc.  My favorite pen is the Parker "51" (aero or vac) and the Pilot vanishing point.

My grail pens are the following:

Edison Glenmont, Parker "51" Fantasy by Kullock, and a Mont Blanc 149.

My collection is now down to three pens, and I'm just trying to keep the pens that I love and will use all the time.  The next brand I want to try is Sheaffer; the triumph nib is so pretty on these.

Anyways, I joined Fountain Pen Network on July 14, 2009, and, for the most part, have been enjoying it.

Now for the story of how I found this forum:
One day, while I was somewhat bored and not wanting to study anatomy and physiology (doh! no), I decided to look up some statistics on FPN, specifically FPN's "overall top posters".  To my surprise, an individual named Titivillus is in second with 11,728 posts (not including Chatter, posts, which takes this user to 14,684, which actually puts this user ahead of Ghost Plane for first place).  What surprised me was that this user is currently banned.  I thought, "with 14,684 posts, you'd think the FPN Admin Team would have found this user's content objectionable 5 years earlier."  I emailed a dear friend of mine (an individual who has had some skirmishes w/the admin team on FPN for some of the most bizarre reasons) asking why this Titivillus fellow was banned.  To paraphrase his response: it's not even worth getting into it, he did nothing, and one of the admins (the one both he and i dislike immensely) decided it was time for titivillus to go.  He then told me to check out Fountain Pen Community where, i was told, those banned from FPN go, or anyone that likes freedom of speech.

So, that's why I'm here.  I'm not banned, yet at least, and have been rather frustrated with the tight leash the users are on on FPN.

I hope this is not offensive to anyone, and if it is I'm sorry.

I'm just introducing myself, and wanted to be honest with how I found all of you.

I'm looking for a community where individuals can discuss fountain pens, and not have to be worried about constructively criticizing some nibmeisters/manufacturers when they do something out of line.  I'm also looking for a community where ideas can be expressed on fountain pens (in a humane, objective manner, of course), with out protecting the more senior fountain pen users.

If this is too much to ask for, then I must admit i need to continue looking for a forum, or just leave forums all together.

I thank all of you for your patience in reading this rather long "Hello" post.

Thanks again,

j

Addendum:

I must add that i'm not looking for a place just to critique all things fountain pens! I'm just saying that if the occasion were to arise, that it's ok to do so as long as it can be done objectively with positive criticism.

does that make sense? i apologize if this is convoluted!

also, i posted this in the wrong subforum! my apologies to the moderators! can it be moved to "New Members"

apologies,

j

Hi,

Welcome to TFPC. You will find that this forum is more open-minded than others. There are lots of them, both in English and in other languages. I am member of four in English (maybe three, now that Lion & Pen is down cry.gif), and two more in Spanish. You might even want to add the Zoss list and other mailing lists.

Not THAT active, though. Counting my posts on all of them I don't reach the 11000 mark you have mentioned above (I don't think I have reached 1/8th of it!!). And this is taking into cosideration that I sometimes post the same things in several fora.

I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Rgds.

Martin

Thanks, Mahutr.

This forum seems more open, and this makes me excited.  i like to read different ideas :)

Also, I'm only at about 980 on FPN, so don't worry, i don't have many posts either!

best,
j

Back when I was noobie on FPN, I was over in chatter and got warned because I had the gall to actually use sarcasm.no
Well it was against a moderator...it turned out.bleh
Not allowed to use sarcasm on the upper class.disbelief

Then, in Inky Thoughts some one with an old maid syndrome compounded by PMS, Said Pelikan Royal Blue boring.
I said, she liked inks that walked on the wild side.biggrin

She reported me, and out two "conversations" were deleted.

So one must remember, that compaired to my normal Boxing com, where 98% of the time I'm mild mannored Clark Kent, I was Mr. Hyde when I thought I was still Clark Kent, any time I used ironey or sarcasm, on FPN....of course lately I've been getting away with it.....
I'm sure I used sacrcasm 4 or 5 times and Ironey twice that, and in the last two months alone.

Welcome to The Community jniforat!

Yes, you will find TFPC more liberal than some forums. We do appreciate a lot of personal opinions, but I (we) want to see personal attacks/snipes/etc.. down to a minimum (peferably not at all!).

Like you, and the posters here already, we are all members at FPN. We are all long time members in "good" standing. I have just passed 1k posts myself. It's true that many here have found "refuge" after leaving FPN for whatever reason. We don't judge, nor talk about
what/why it happened any more than necessary. I have no problems with FPN. It is still a good site; It is really good for "The Marketplace" as both a buyer and seller.

There are other pen forums now, but we are among the older forums after FPN. In the three years this site has existed, there has been tremendous growth. I look forward to your advice, and information here!

Yep that's me.  the fallen poster from FPN.

from wiki

Titivillus was a demon said to work on behalf of Belphegor, Lucifer or Satan to introduce errors into the work of a scribe. The first reference to Titivillus by name occurred in Tractatus de Penitentia, c. 1285, by Johannes Galensis, John of Wales.[1] Titivillus has also been described as collecting idle chat that occurs during church service, and mispronounced, mumbled or skipped words of the service itself, to take to Hell to be counted against the offender.

cool.

i always wondered about that.

Yes it is unfortunate that I decided to tilt at windmills that turned out to be admins and moderators of that site.

I can't say anymore since it turns out they have spies on all the other pen sites as well as Twitter & Facebook who relay any slight against FPN back.

So for me to try and get back in their good graces I will or can not say anything that could even hint at something that FPN members do.

Hi,

After reading your post, I happen to agree with all of you about FPN. That's why I decided to join you, too.

Thanks,

John Martinson
