Fountain Pens

Technically speaking, we should call "Fountain pen" to anything with it's own ink reservoir ("fountain"), thus including roller balls, ball pens, stylos (R�tring, Tintenkuli, ...), Pelikan Graphos (however they are called), and so.

Right now, instead of correcting everyone else, we should keep to your statement, which matches the general idea of the fountain pen.

Not my idea, BTW. The above, in other words, is part of the Da Book (if my memory serves me well).

I don't know about that.�

If a writing instrument can be called by another name, rollerball, ball point... then why muddy the water and insist that they all be called fountain pens?�

It's like insisting that a dog be called an animal because a dog fits the definition of animal.

It's kind of weird. I have always called "Fountain pens" the fountain pens. When I read this, I realized that it is actually right... but still call "fountain pens" just the fountain pens. Though I understand that even if I called "fountain pen" a ball pen it would be right, I wouldn't do this.

In our local branch of eBay, lots of ads just say "lapicera" (our translation to "pen") to ball pens, roller balls, fountain pens, ... turning this quite tricky.

It really depends on your belief in the correctness of the reference.�

I take this definition as correct.�A pen with a nib and an ink reservoir, arranged so that the reservoir supplies ink to the nib automatically as needed, with a continuous flow like that of a fountain, to permit uninterrupted writing. The ink flow is controlled by capillary action and a metered inflow of air.�

It could be at the time of the definition's creation there was no other pen but one with a nib and no one bothered to update the definition.�
