How are you carrying your pens?
Permalink Closed

As my collection starts to grow (5 pens with another 3 on the way) I realise I have no way of protecting them or carrying them.  At the moment they're sat loose in a drawer with inks, guitar picks and slides, and all kinds of other bits and bobs.

I'm thinking some kind of leather pouch, or maybe a kimono wrap from Stewart at FPN.

How does everyone carry?

And for those who use a leather case have you had any trouble with it tarnishing your pens?

PS gimmi pics wink

I have a spare 20 pen case that I'll donate when I send the package. The only down side is your going to see all those empty slots and feel compelled to fill them up.

The enabler strikes again......bwahahahahahaaha.

lol. fuuuuuuu = funny

Yup it's a full zipper case. opens like a book, roughly 7" x 9" per side. my bad. it's not a 20 pen case it's a 24 slot job. 12 slots per side with a sewn in leather sheet/divider to keep the pens from rubbing when it's closed.

You are the man (and the enabler). No idea if you saw my thread over at FPN but I mentioned I was considering a bigger case so I could use pens for one side and keep my journal in the other.

7" by 9" works out at 18cm by 23cm roughly. My CIAK journal measures about 15x22x2. Better yet I could fit my daily journals in easy!

And Dennis you still haven't mentioned how YOU carry your pens :P

sigh..yeah, I know. I have a fan club dedicated to my awesome nature

I havent been to FPN in a LOOONG time. I divide my fp message board time between here, pentrace & 1 or 2 other places.

I'll bet you can fit it in the case. I use an 8 x 10ish molskein day planner that fits in my 48 pen case & is my main daily travel piece. I usually have 20 plus pens with me at any given time.

20 plus? WOW.

Never got to grips with pentrace, the layout seems so un-userfriendly!

As do I; usually a fountain pen in a shirt pocket and a Fisher space pen in my business card case.

I use this from JetPens when I'm hauling around my laptop bag: http://www.jetpens.com/product_info.php/cPath/159_811_815/products_id/4417 It has enough room for a few FPs, a MP or two, dry erase markers, a package of Waterman carts, a highlighter, a few bucks in change, flash drives, and cetera.  It's a friggen mobile office.

I just got a sweet index card wallet as a gift from a friend; its elastic pen band holds a VP perfectly.

More often than not I'll take a single pen in my front pants/jeans pocket, too.

Yeah, I carry a pen or two in my pocket, or in-between buttons on a shirt with no pockets! :)

I also have a leather portfolio that has three slots for pens
(usually keep a highliter, and a red gel pen there- grades)

At home, I have a case similar to what Dennis has given you. I also have a wood case that holds another six. I have a multi-watch winder that has a drawer underneath, I have five pens in there too along with a couple watches. The rest are in the boxes they came in, or in a glass decanter mug on my desk in rotation (holds 4-6).

If I have a need to carry more pens, I use a nylon zippered case I bought at Michael's with some sketching pencils in it for about $7.00:

Look in your flea markets or on EBay for two or three cigar-cigar cases. I have one, that needs sewing that I got for next to nothing. It will carry three pens...and I can't see any one needing more.

Whoops, I'm from the day before yesterday, I have pockets on 90% of my shirts. If you are so dumb as not to have shirt pockets, buy a purse of some sort or another. You could also have buttonhole pen pocket sewed into your shirts.

Shirt pockets do so well in carrying pens. Some even have button down flaps, so your pens can't play in traffic.

I'm always confused by cigar sizing for buying for a pen. How are the diametres of the holes compared to your pens?

Also I'm sure I read that direct contact with leather is bad for certain pen materials?

Most of the time it is one pen in the pocket. I can't get my mind around carrying all pens together. Maybe it is the few people who have lost their one case and x pens inside that keep me to a single carry.

If you count pens and gel pens I do have a Levenger leather 4-6 pen holder with a side pocket for refills. They haven't made it for years but it is a nice soft leather.

I push cigar cases...some can be had cheap in flea markets or the bay....and they come in sizes big enough for 1,2,3,4 pens. They were sturdy enough so fragile cigars were not crushed or broken.
Come in various shades too.
I have a three cigar case, all I put on it was leather balm and polished it to a sheen, in I wanted the age marks to be under the sheen, so it didn't look brand new.
I had mine sewn so the Cross can't get out of it's cage and nibble on other pens.

If you want something a bit nicer there are two guys making cigar cases out of Alligator an Crocodile or Ostrich if you want.

I'd forgotten I'd posted to this a long time ago.
Mine are for small cigars, and I got small fingers, Mine fit a Twonesend and a Pelikan 605 on each end and becasue it was sewn, a P-75 in the middle.

I can stick my small finger down  up to the joint on the out side holes...to the tip on the inside hole.
If you need bigger cigar cases, one should drop in on a cigar store to see what size cigar your biggest pen is.
That might help.
A cigar case with four or five ight fit your shirt pocket tighter.

If you find some, before you slap the shoe polish on, think if a leather balm would not make it also look antique.

I have a 2 pen leather carrying case, which fits inside my jacket pocket. The rest of my pens are either in a Chinese lacquer box on my desk or in the original boxes they came in on my bookshelf. The Chinese Lacquer box is not a good solution, so if there are any enablers left out there well...

I got only 5 pens with boxes. A 1929-32, and a  '53-54 box and a three new ones.

I have a couple of cigar humidors.

That are not yet filled with those little flannel covered slots.

I'll need to get the slots and have a carpender match me a couple of wooden frames around them with a lift off system. It should rest on "posts" in the corner of the box or that section.
No reason not to go super fancy, with fancy stuff.

Can't make a picture show up.....what's the trick to how big to make it or something?

The big one is a very nice walnut humidor with a dehumitifier,  the other smaller one is a ceder lined, root wood veneer humidor.
