J Herbin Gris Nuage (Grey) Ink Review

 

Paper- Cambridge College Ruled Legal Pad (Canary)

Pen- Parker 45 FinePointFP

 

This is my first review, so any comments &/or feedback is welcome!

This is J Herbins Gris Nuage, a light to regular toned grey ink that is available in both cartridges and Herbins famous bottle with lip for pen resting. This is part of the free ink for review that The Community was offered by Karen Doherty, VP of Marketing with Exaclair Ink (J. Herbin Inks).

 

Surprisingly, I found this ink to dry rather quickly. There was minimal smudging even after one minute. After three minutes, the ink was completely dry. Even a water test, which involved smearing the paper with a paper towel, did not allow this ink to smear.

I do not have any other experience with J Herbin, but it is safe to assume you can use this ink for mail and envelope addressing.

 

This ink does not bleed through the paper used, and feathering was minimal from the paper towel test. Perhaps the fact that this ink is light prevents it from bleeding through. I found the shading to be very nice, but the ink is light, and would do much better on white paper in comparison of colored paper.

 

As I am very big on mixing inks, I made a very nice dark grey, almost "slate" shade mixing this ink with black ink. The Herbin site states that Herbin inks are ph neutral and they use natural dyes. You can even purchase Herbin inks directly at jherbin.com.

Thanks for the review, I like the idea of a good grey.

I am a complete novice with fountain pens but I would have thought waiting a minute for ink to dry to avoid smearing would not be acceptable - let alone 3 minutes. I though 10 seconds would have been about the target. Am I just too impatient??

I'd consider that a fair estimate but it also depends on the paper itself.

I've had pretty good luck with J. Herbin inks as well as Diamine and Private Reserve. In the grey tones I really like PR's Grey Flannel and use it regularly in both bottle and cartridge.

I suspect that the smudging test is for seconds, not minutes.
