G'day all,

As you can tell another member from Australia.

I have only just started collecting and still feeling my way but am heading towards finding pre-1960 pens - nothing specific, but will no doubt find what I want to collect before long.

Have just picked up a couple of pens through e-bay but only one has arrived so far - a striated grey "Merlina" which I am told was made around 1930 - but I hope to do some homework to find out more.

I have so many questions as I was unaware of the variety of pens available. If I can start with the first - I know that pens are meant to be used but if you found an old pen that hadn't been inked would its value be affected by using it?

I look forward to learning more over the years, thanks,

Roger

Welcome to the Community, Roger!

To answer your question, IMO you should do what you like with your pens!
If you bought it to keep it, then you should write with it! If you bought it to try
and sell it as a unused, vintage pen, then you may wish to keep it that way.

To sum it up- INK IT!

Frank

G'day Roger,

Welcome.  Good to see you on the boards.

Re the old uninked pen: I reckon it would lose it's value, but then again, the pen is only worth what someone will pay for it - IF you ever decided to sell it.  Personally, I'd probably keep the uninked pen as it is and save it for a special occasion.....like signing the paperwork to hand to the boss when I'm about to retire smile.gif

I haven't been collecting pens for all that long either, and only have 20 or so.  Depending on your preference, it can be an expensive hobby (Mrs Aussie FP would agree), or can be as inexpensive as you want it to be.  This is a great forum for sharing ideas and tips, so you will get a lot out of it.

Have fun.

Gerard.

Thanks Gerard,

Did I see in another thread that you are also based in Adelaide? What a small world.

I've picked up a couple of what are claimed to be "New old stock" pens that are due in next week - Pilots from Japan. I was drawn to them by the case colours and yes my wife would also agree that I'm spending too much (both time and money) on the new hobby.

All the best,

Roger
