Parker 61: which ink is save?
Permalink Closed

Comrades,

I bought a capillary action Parker 61. Normally I use Waterman's Florida Blue, but is it perhaps safer to buy a bottle of Quink Washable Blue?

Thanks,

R.

Nah, don't worry about ink in your 61. I use a little bit of everything from vintage skrip, quink & waterman to pr & noodlers in my 61's & have no problems at all with them.

To solve the issue of having to flush them out a million times before I switch inks, I went to Harbor Freight & bought a one way squeeze valve & some tubing. Drop one end of the tubing in a pitcher of water, the other end has the filler/section plugged in to the other hose held over the sink. Hold the section with one hand so it doesn't come rocketing off from the pressure & squeeze the valves bulb. A dozen squeezes or so & the filler is clear.

Hello R.  One important question is: Is the pen new old stock or an older used 61 in good condition (or even a junker)?  It makes a difference.

Hi Pete,

I suppose it is an older used 61 in good condition.

Thanks,

Hi Reactionary.  Then flushing it is the way to go.  As for the ink, any modern ink you like should be fine.  If I were really paranoid and the pen was really valuable like a Presidential model or something, I would probably use Quink.  I recently sold a new old stock Parker 61, never inked of course, and if I had decided to use it, Aurora Blue would have been my choice.

Turns out I recently sold two of them.  They were both NOS but only one had the odd filler, the other was an Aerometric.  If I recall, Parker did market a converter for awhile after enough people complained.  It really came down to being a clean person.  If you took care of your 61 properly it's probably still working today.

WOW! Look at that stub nib! Awesome pen Pete & the red end filler unit is a very uncommon find. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen these.

Awesome stuff man.

Awesome stuff but gone gone gone

As the topic denotes the pens are gone gone gone.  I sold them off several months ago.  I was tempted to ink both of them but sold them instead.

Nice pens Pete! I had never seen the red end of a filler before. My 61 will arrive soon; I have bought a bottle of Quink Permanent Blue for the occasion.

Filling question; is it okay to dip only the end of the filler in the bottle?, I mean, about a centimetre or two?

Quink is a good trouble free choice.

It's better if you just drop the filer unit in the bottle & let it set for a few minutes to ensure a complete fill.
