Cartridge/converter rollerball pens
Permalink Closed

I've recently been dabbling in fountain pens (slightly) and ink (more so) after a rather long dry spell of mostly pencils and a handful of ballpoints. I currently have inked:

Kaweco Classic Sport with a Kaweco blue cartridge

Noodler's Creaper with Diamine Salamander (my current favorite ink); a piston filler, but still ...

Noodler's Platinum Preppy rollerball conversion, also with Diamine Salamander

Lyra Calypso with the blue cartridge it came with (it also holds a bottomless cartridge to fill the space below the cartridge where one could, presumably, keep a spare)

KenPen Rotary Pen with Diamine Salamander slowly displacing the previous blue ink (interesting results!)

I also flushed and inked my "Stealth" Pilot Vanishing Point, also with Diamine Salamander.

One of these pens will be going to work with me in the morning.

Oh, and two Pilot V5 Hi-Tecpoint Cartridge System pens, one red and one green.

I discovered that I have a Zebra R-301 that must have been inked at least three years ago and is still writing perfectly. Top-notch cap, there! Add the J. Herbin roller and a Beifa "Free Ink Pen" found on eBay, and I have ten inked c/c, piston, or eyedropper rollerballs. In order from most bold to most fine, they (and their inks) are:

Zebra R-301, Zebra black cartridge
Lyra Calypso, bundled blue cartridge
Kaweco Sport, Kaweco blue cartridge
KenPen Rotary Pen, Platinum cartridge refilled with Diamine Salamander
Monteverde Stilosfera prototype "Ink Ball," Monteverde black cartridge
Beifa Free Ink pen, Monteverde blue cartridge
Noodler's Creaper, Diamine Salamander
Pilot V5 Hi-Tecpoint Cartridge System, two each, Pilot cartridges (black and green)
J. Herbin rollerball, generic cartridge refilled with J. Herbian Lie de Thé
Platinum Preppy Noodler's eyedropper rollerball conversion, Diamine Salamander

The KenPen is the smoothest of the lot, a black and gold short-long style, probably made by Platinum (the cartridges are identical). The Kaweco is almost as smooth, with the Monteverde a close third. The Preppy conversion is the coarsest, with the Beifa a tad better.
