Repairing Cracked Section on Waterman 12
Permalink Closed

Hi all,

As title implies, have section for old ED pen where some idiot looks to have tried to K/O feed & nib using-- I kid you not-- a phillips head screw driver!

Must've slipped on the moron because threaded part of section has crack running right down the middle.

Googled solvents for Vulcanized rubber, but not chemistry major & info. seems to be more about recyling old tires into solution.

Question then:  Anyone know of solvent, or compound that when painted on inside of section would melt or seal it without distorting shape of course.

Any tips/pointers appreciated.

thx

--Bruce

The short answer is your search turned up zip is because there isn't anything that will work as a chemical weld on hard rubber. Even if the section were celluloid and COULD be chemically welded the stresses the section are under via the nib/feed are considerable for such thin material and not a weld I'd be likely to trust as far as I could throw it. Your best bet is to source a new section at a show or through WTB posts. Unless it's a really rare one you should be able to track one down. I'd start over on FPB.

Yeah, that might explain arcane lingo about polymers & sulfur bonds, etc.

Shame someone would just go off on a half-butt approach to servicing a pen (or whatever he was attempting to do.) Clean it? Nib was good so don't know why was trying to take section/feed/nib apart.

Get thee a K/O kit!

Anyway, thanks for clarification on BHR. Guess it's a write off. To FPB, FPN, or some discreet inquiries I go!

BTW: nice work on 'customized' pens from other reply. Liked the gold overlay.

No sweat man, glad to help out when I can.

Thanks on the overlay. It's not gold, (crappy pics) It's aluminum or some other white metal. It's for sale if your interested. $25 shipped.
