Restoring Finish Gloss to a 1970s Parker BigRed
Permalink Closed

Greetings! I have a 1970's Parker BigRed rollerball that I used the wrong cleaner on, and it took the surface shine right off this otherwise beautiful pen! I'm so angry with myself for that stupid mistake.

Anyways, does anyone know of a polish or wax that might safely restore the shine to this pen? Even a partial gloss will be a victory. However, I don't want to ruin it any further. Thanks in advance for any advice on this!

That is terrible news Hubert! Very sorry to hear about the pen!
I am sure that it can be fixed, but it could be costly! I am assuming that it is plastic, so it probably needs either a good polishing process on a lathe, or a coating of a plastic sealant/shellac type solvent as well! You should consult one of the pen turners here on the forum. I would also ask someone like Ron Z (Main Street Pens) about the solvent solution as well. It still needs some lathe time to polish the sealant solvent to a good shine!

Hope that helps! Good luck! Let us know what you find out!

Regards,
Frank

Ouch! I was afraid of that being the case, Frank. I do know Ron Z., so I'll inquire of him what it would take to restore the finish. It is one of only 2 Big Reds I have, and of course, it was the better of the pair that I messed up! This is a yellow Ver. 1, with gold trim and black end cap, so getting a replacement is going to cost more than I can reasonably afford! Oh well, such is the cost of ignorance and proceeding before inquiring! Thanks for the input, sir!

Take care,
