Cross pencil disassembly?
Permalink Closed

Does anyone know how to get a Cross twist pencil apart? I just acquired a Cardinal 0.9mm pencil whose twist mechanism seems a bit loose (pushing down a bit hard on the lead will make the mechanism turn!), and whose barrel has a nice dent in the side. I'm hoping if I can get it apart to smooth the barrel and tighten the works.

They want me to send it in, but the problem isn't serious enough to warrant the postage. I can undoubtedly fix it myself if I can figure out how to get it apart. smile.gif

Well, after looking at a few Cross patent drawings, though none for this particular mechanism, it seems that the metal tip unscrews from the mechanism (against some weak thread locker), after which the mechanism simply pressed out the back of the barrel (again with some soft adhesive resistance). The sloppiness is inside the mechanism, and there doesn't seem to be any way to disassemble that, so I put it all back together after working the barrel's dent out a bit. The tricky part is that the bushing at the back wouldn't come out with the tools at hand (I need a little internal puller of some kind), and so the other bushing into which the mechanism was glued came off inside the barrel. That bushing has a key molded into it that fits a keyway on the mechanism, so I just had to be careful lining the two up again, and it all went back together smoothly. I'll just have to live with the slack for now.
