Pen size comparisons.
Permalink Closed

Just for fun I thought I'd compare some pens by width, broken down into three somewhat reasonable categories, thin, medium and large. There are of course some pens that are even larger, like the venerable MB 149, Pelikan 1000 and the Omas Magnums and Dupont Xtra Large, but I'll save that for another day.

So here we go.
Thin Pens.

From left to right:  Parker 75; Waterman Prelude; Montblanc 144; ST Dupont Classique; ST Dupont Gatsby and a Parker 95.

Medium Pens.

From left to right: Omas Ogiva; Pelikan 400; Waterman Gentleman; a rather special Parker 51; ST Dupont Olympio Medium size; Conway Stewart 58; Sheaffer Targa and another mid sized Olympio.

Large Pens.

From left to right: Sheaffer PFM; a Large Size Olympio; Waterman LeMan Opera; Olympio; modern Sheaffer Balance; Pelikan 800; Parker Duofold Centennial; Conway Stewart Duro; Montblanc 146 and an Omas 360.

A couple people mentioned that it would help if they could see the different pens side by side to get a better idea of the variation, so here is another picture with some of the pens from above side by side for reference.

Again, from left to right: ST Dupont Gatsby, Medium Olympio, Large Olympio; Sheaffer Touchdown, Targa, OS Balance; Parker 75, 51, modern Duofold Centennial; Waterman Prelude, Gentleman, Leman.

And a family portrait of ST Dupont pens. Of all my pens these are definitely among my favorites. Each one is as close to being perfect as possible. The precision is incredible, sliding the caps on is so smooth, and when it seats there is a satisfying 'click'. The weight, balance, workmanship of the finish is amazing. Even the underside of the clip is polished to perfection.

From left to right you see an Ellipsis, Gatsby, The Colombus 500 year Anniversary Classique, two medium sized Olympios and two large Olympios.

Except on the Ellipsis, the non metallic parts are Chinese lacquer over brass. It is all done by hand, built up layer by layer with each layer sanded and polished before the next layer is applied. The pen on the far right is called the Vertigo pattern and all the colors are made by applying different colored lacquers by hand.

The Colombus (note the strange for Americans spelling) Edition came out in 1992, the 500th. Anniversary of his voyage.

It is a very slim pen.

On the cap is a Caravel done by dropping copper and brass dust onto the black lacquer base by hand and then covered by clear layers of lacquer.

The details are amazing to see. There were 2000 of these pens made and this is number 91.

OK Brandon,

whats it going to take me to get those last 2 pens on the right out of your hands & into mine? The M800 & Blue Carb. VP.

I have a like new silver/grey VP I'll replace your blue with (you can even keep your nib unit. ) and a B-B-Bad Arse early model Waterman Carene in Prussian Blue with a sinfully sweet medium/broad nib I can offer up to help ease the pain of their passing. Hell. I can offer more if I need to but. I REALLY want those 2 pens.

PM me if your interested in trade.
