Shaeffer snorkel
Permalink Closed

I just received a shaeffer snorkel all black and looks good.  I am haveing trouble filling it though.  The snorkel and everything works but when I pull the plunger up, I hear kind of a hissing sound and it doesn't seem like the thing is taking any ink.  Any ideas on this?

do bubbles come out of the ink when you push it in? If they do, hold the pen over the ink & see if any empties back into the bottle. The pen naturally mkes a pfft sound when it's filling. When was the pen last restored?

Nope.  No bubbles, and nothing comes out of the snorkel when I try to push it out over the ink.  I don't know if the pen has ever been restored.

I have cleaned the nib feed and section very well.  It still just will not take ink into the tube inside.  I think that I might need to take the thing apart all the way and see what is going on.  If I need parts for this thing, do you have any parts for this thing.

Wes,

Sorry for not geting back to this one, it slipped past me. It deff sounds like your snorkel needs a new sac. If it's not drwaing ink in at all you'll need to replace the sac. o ring at the blind cap/tube joint & the point holdr gasket in the section.

The easiest was to get the black plug that holds the filler tube out is to take a piece of wire thin enough to fit in the hole at the base of the metal sac protector. Slide it in and break up the old ink sac inside, then push the plug out from the inside. Clean all of the old sac out of the sac protector cage & off the black plug (really an internal section so to speak), now this is the tricky part.

There are 4 lugs on the side of the sac protector, depending on which version you have, will depend on where you need to open/bend the cage. Some models have an inward facing crimp on top of the lugs, some are on the smooth radius between the lugs. Regardless of which style you have be VERY careful & with a smooth jawed set of hemostats VERY VERY gently bend the crimps out just enough to allow the black section/plug to go back in the sacprotector. Then just as gently, recrimp them. Sounds tough, but it's honestly easier than it sounds.

This was just a quickie how to. If you need any detailed help, you have my #. Give me a call I'll be glad to help out.

Dennis

  Wes,
I'm thinking the snorkel fills on the down stroke, obvious to
me maybe not to you. Huh?

Snorkels do fill on the downstroke

Yes, that's right. Counter intuitive, I know, but it is the downstroke. Try it now and your pen will be fixed.
